Sarkes and Mary Tarzian Nature Preserve

This nature preserve is a privately owned property with a conservation easement placed on it in conjunction with the Sycamore Land Trust. Located within the city limits of Bloomington, IN, the preserve is 16 acres of valuable urban green space with an interpretive nature trail showcasing native plants and wildlife.
When Eco Logic LLC starting working on the property in 1999 the site contained large clones of Tree of Heaven that covered approximately 25% of the site. The Tree of Heaven were originally cut and stump treated which killed the main stems however root sprouts continued to shoot up for several years. The root sprouts were treated with a basal bark application using an oil based herbicide. Tree of Heaven has now been eradicated from the property except the few seedlings that volunteer each year. Eco Logic provides ongoing management of all of the invasive species on site including the new arrival Japanese Stilt Grass.
Japanese Stilt Grass has only appeared in the last few years and we have been treating it aggressively. Because Japanese Stilt Grass is an annual it is important to eradicate it before it sets seed and to look for new species sprouting from the seed bank. Eco Logic has taken GPS points on all of the outbreaks of Japanese Stilt Grass and will monitor the success of our management efforts.
