Lake County, 430 acres
Hoosier Prairie is a large remnant of the prairie landscape that was once common in northwest Indiana. The plant diversity is exceptionally high due to the wide range of plant communities on site. The sand rises support dry black oak savannas, mesic sand prairie openings can be found on slopes between the rises and swales, wet prairies, sedge meadows and marshes are scattered through the preserve in depressions and flats.
Hoosier Prairie is one of Eco Logic’s favorite properties to work on because it has a plethora of plant communities and biodiversity. Eco Logic has performed many restoration project to date focusing on removing the pressure that woody plants place on herbaceous vegetation. These projects have ranged from managing invasive woody plants such as Glossy and Common Buckthorn (to help retain the herbaceous diversity of the preserve) to projects which focus on removing pioneer species like Cottonwoods and Willows. The integration of these management techniques with prescribed burning allows the significant biodiversity of Hoosier Prairie to be preserved.
