Prairie communities once covered approximately 15% of Indiana,
but due to extensive development and agriculture less than 1% of
this area remains today. Eco Logic is dedicated to re-introducing
prairie communities to increase biodiversity and to reduce the intensive
maintenance of turf grasses. We customize seed mixes to match the
slope, soil, and sun exposure of each site, and to meet the aesthetic
needs of our clients. For diverse wildflower displays we focus on
mixes with short grasses such as Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium
scoparius), Side Oats Gramma (Bouteloua curtipendula),
and Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis). These short
stature grasses coexist well with wildflowers and allow them to
remain visually accessible.
Tallgrass Prairies consist mainly of Indiana Grass
(Sorghastrum nutans) and Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii)
and are better suited to plantings installed on large acre sites.
It is important to use tall and somewhat aggressive wildflowers
such as native Sunflowers’, New England Asters, (Aster novae-angliae)
and Tall Coreopsis (Coreopsis tripteris) which can compete
with tall grasses to provide a diverse plant community rather than
a monoculture.

Seeding with Truax No-Till Seed Drill
|
| To avoid the detrimental effects
of tilling and plowing, Eco Logic uses a Truax No-Till Seed Drill
for installation of native grass and wildflower seedlings on larger
properties. A no-till seed drill installs and packs the seeds at proper
depths, thus ensuring successful germination and proliferation of
your native plant community. |
